Elegant boat forms handcrafted from steel and patina.
This metal sculpture depicts a wave-pierced boat, suggesting light reflecting off the hull. The laser-cut steel pattern completely pierces both sides of this sculpture; it features burnished silver steel on the outside and a variegated blue color on the inside, resulting in a reflective surface that moves with the light. A lovely combination of blues and silver mounted on a table top stand, it's lacquer-coated for a long-lasting, care-free surface.

This sculptural, boat-shaped vessel is created from cold-rolled steel, steel rod, wire, and gold leaf. I have created a push/pull in the energy of this piece. Each of us sometimes feels that our world is falling into chaos. I capture this feeling in this piece, with one end of the boat in perfect harmony and the other gradually falling away. I do this to remind us that life is a blend of strength and uncertainty. Gold leaf illuminates the interior to make it seem as if it were lit from within. The gold leaf continues along the top of a few of the rods so you see an illumination from tip to tip.

Image transfers allow me to utilize both my photography and painting skills and are the core disciplines for much of my artwork.
My time in Japan as an exchange student changed my life and has influenced my artwork throughout my career. The influence is everywhere in my paintings, photography and functional design. The travel experience has never left me…
As a consummate explorer and space science fan I have followed and worked briefly both in the Air Force and for NASA. The Apollo moon missions dominated my youth and made great impact on my vision and hope for the future.
While exploring boxes of old stuff one day I stumbled upon my Saturn 5 rocket model. I immediately began photographing it and using it in my Rockets and Stuff series.
Most of these are image transfers onto felt, aluminum or wood with painting and steel structural elements.
Feel free to explore!

Growing up on books like, "S is for Space" and "R is for Rocket" and also working at NASA, I have a deep affection for all things to do with space exploration. The Apollo 11 astronauts returned from the moon on my birthday in 1969, what a present! This piece explores all these things.

Lagrange points are areas in space situated between two large bodies (Earth and moon for example) where a satellite can be placed and maintain position with minimal stationkeeping.
I was inspired to explore this series after hearing a lecture by Dr. John Mather on the James Webb Space Telescope that will be launched in 2018. It will be placed at a lagrange point which rests behind the moon.

I call these pieces “Image Sculptures” because even though I am using imagery to create them, the process is 3 dimensional. Working on aluminum and building layer after layer.
Abstract combinations of imagery, painting and sculptural elements combine to create floating elements where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

While creating this piece I tried to show the arial view of two things: A ramshackle house with a corrugated roof and exposed plaster and lathe walls connected by an interrupted diving board to a cool blue rectangular swimming pool. I believe that this speaks to how our priorities direct our focus and where we spend our money.

I believe it is my responsibility as an artist to keep telling stories of our histories. I am obligated to observe the word around me and make some sense of it through visual means. Successfully doing this gives meaning to the social concerns and heightens awareness in each of us.
I’m influenced by the journeys we take in our lives. I am interested in how we travel from one phase of life to another. Sometimes it involves a physical move. Other times it is an emotional shift. How do we make it feel like home? When do we know we are ready to move on? Do we get stuck on concepts of safety and security, or do we honor the opportunity for growth?
I symbolize this through my use of iconic forms: boats, nests, houses…for me these forms hold histories. Where we have been and where we are going.
My primary use of steel gives permanence to these structures, but I push the boundaries by mixing in elements of glass, wire, paper and encaustic to bring a feeling of fragility and the ethereal nature of life.

The Japanese dolls are a piece of emotional history for me. I spent time there, in Japan, as an exchange student. It was a pivotal moment in my personal history and has affected my artwork, my designs and many aspects of my life ever since. I also think that Geisha dolls show a cultural uniqueness that’s instantly recognizable. They have subtle non-verbal connections, tell a story and I believe add meaning to an otherwise abstract surface.
When I work with the figure, whether it’s a human or a human-doll, it inspires me by the impression of expression on the face. What does it seem to say? How does it affect us? What do we feel when we look into it’s eyes? By placing the figures among the parallel bands, I create a layered depth within the boundary of the piece. Generally I place them above a textured metal surface that’s simultaneously reflective and solid.

These are my oil on canvas paintings from my private collection.
I love trees. Especially in the winter when their bones show and the roots poke through the dirt and moss. What I love painting however is the negative space between the branches. Look closely. The work is about the open space between the simply executed branches. The movement of the light and air when a wind blows and changes the shapes. Or snow. Snow rewrites the openings and reshapes the roots. Really love trees.
Most are framed and ready to hang.

I have pioneered this new process for creating 2d art work by using chemical patinas on steel panels as one might use paint on canvas. The difference however is that the patinas are part of the metal, not just on it as paint would be. This allows the steel’s natural luminosity to show through.
Specifically, the panel is formed by folding sheet steel into a “canvas”. It is prepared by sanding and cleaning, and then is masked off to protect the areas not being patinated. The chemical is applied using a variety of techniques, spraying, brushing and wiping, in different dilutions and mixtures. Through exploration I have developed a palette which reflects the nature of the images. The patina may take from 5 seconds to 5 minutes to reach color saturation and numerous layers are required to achieve specific colors. To ensure the lasting quality of the image the patina is neutralized and the entire panel is clear coated to protect the surface.
I love making these panels. They hold for me the essential elements that comprise my own nature of being an artist for more than thirty years.
NOTE: I am no longer making this style of painting so what you see here in this collection is the last… Fair warning!
